I have a breeding pair of rabbits and I'm just trying to find out some things. I can't seem to find the answers anywhere. Lol! I'm trying to find out if the female (our female should be due anytime now) has a discharge right before delivery like cats/dogs/horses. I know they usually make a nest and what not. She's not doing that but this is her first litter and she's young.

They taste like chicken. LOL Just kidd'n
Yeah usually right before they give birth....say a week or two, they will start what's called "Hair Pulling" they actually tear out hair from thier own bodies to build the next, straw or hay would be another good thing to have available to them.
Not sure about the discharge....never noticed that before, obviously there is some left-overs from the actual birth, but the female usually does a pretty stellar job of cleaning that up.

I raised them as a kid & also again up until about 18 months ago.
First time moms don't always pull fur, and you'll want to watch carefully that they don't just have babies on the wire, the mom should have a nice nest box full of hay- she will get restless & mess with the hay a few days before kindling.
The discharge could be something, so watch her carefully & see how she is. Sometimes stress can cause an end to the pregnancy before birth. New moms are easily stressed.

Thanks yall. I've had rabbits have babies before but they were all accidents. LOL! This one was actually planned. I have her in a cage that has a plastic bottom with the raised sides and she has shavings for bedding. I also have a nest box in with her and she always has lots of hay and grass and her pellets to eat. I've never paid that close of attention to rabbits before but I have been with this girl. I noticed today when giving her weekly dose of hairball medicine that she had the discharge and boy is she MEAN! She don't want me to hold her or touch her now. I've got the scratches to prove it. Lol! She's drinking alot more water than usual too. Plus I noticed she's laying around more. I know more about horses, dogs, and cats than I do anything else. And I tend to ask different questions than alot of people or just notice more. Something. She's due any day if she IS pregnant. I have the male in a seperate cage and he's across the room from her because she don't want him ANYWHERE near her. Anyways, I'll just keep an eye on her. She's not pulling out hair yet but has been moving around her hay and stuff. I'll keep yall updated.

Mature females are territorial, they will often kill males up in their space. You'll want to continue to house separately. When it's time to breed your girl again, take her to the buck's cage for the visit, let them do their thing, & put her back in her home- even an overnight stay can be risky from here on out.
The drinking more fluids & aggression is normal for a knocked up doe... you should have kits in about 28-31 days from the breeding date if all goes well. They are born with very little hair & eyes closed. You may want to check on them (to remove any still born etc), be careful when you do... Rub you hand over the new moms' nose or a rag with strong perfume, this keeps her from hurting the babies due to your smell being on them.
Good Luck!
