well winter is just about here and i have a couple of questions. first of all i don't want anything to do with eltc heaters or fan heater. can any of you point me at which good one would be that won't be toxic/fumes that can harm the snakes? such as some kind of oil or (i can't spell it but it's "k" something?) maybe a link or pics of what unit can be use?

reason for me wanting this is because i don't want my burms to catch a "RI" and also the second reason is i think i could save my eltc bill from using space heater and lower the house gas heat. most of all i think space heater is cozy to have:D thanks for any of your help or advice on this.

I found this on Lowes home improvement web page
http://images.lowes.com/product/044387/044387207157.jpg

3 heat settings
24-hour timer
Dial controls
auto shut-off
Advanced Fin construction creates faster convection heat
Faster convection heat
Preassembled wheels
1-year warranty
Extended Protection Plans are available for an additional charge

They are great I had one and loved it. I have also seen one at The Home Depot the other day that was filled with water. They use the water ones all over Europe. We had them in every room when I lived there, and even one in the metal tub to keep it warm. I couldn't find the one on home depots web page but when in doubt search at Wal Mart right???

thanks but i was not looking for a electric as it can make my bill high. but i do not know unless someone can correct me if i'm wrong. i just believe that if you use air conti. then an eltc heater would make your bills high.

i would go with one like chuck posted rather than a kerosine heater you just have to figure that if you are burning any kind of fuel you will have some sort of by product such as smoke smell or residue i myself use a couple 15 dollar ceramic fan heaters from wally~world and they work great

oh and just on a side note make sure no matter what type you go with this time of year is dry anyway and add the heater drying the air out even more you either need a humidifier or you need to make sure you are misting often.

Not that I'm an expert, but I'm not sure I would want a space heater with an open flame or natural gas burning in my house. The only down side to it is you have to keep buying gas bottles for it or get your bottle filled every time it goes out. That and it only lasts for 12 hours and you might want to price Kerosene in your area where I live a 55 gal drum is about 125 bucks. The ones I gave you you just plug into the wall. Unless your worried about the power going out in your area I would shy away from it, just my personal opinion. Price your electric bill aginst how much the liquid fuel cost and make your own choice, but I wouldn't have a kerosene burning heater in my house with 4 kids and 2 dogs.......

Also Kerosene Heaters put off fumes....we have one for our cabin upnorth.

It is best to go with a electric heater.....electricity is much cheaper than gas or Kerosene, and safer.....you'll still save a lot of money this way...and it's a lot safer.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I have a kerosene heater myself just like the one you posted. I have used it for my seven years of keeping snakes and it has never affected them in any way; and yes, it does emit fumes from it. Most people will become accostomed to the fumes after they use if for a few weeks. However, I am thinking of going to electric very soon. Kerosene where I live is going for $3.50/gallon, and I have to buy 10 Gallons of kerosene every 2-3 days (basically $70/week or $280/month). And this is with the heater burning only during the evening and night. Once winter really sets in here, it would have to burn 24 hours a day. And right now, all fuel prices are going up, and while electricity is increasing slightly, fuel prices are increasing even more. Plus, fuel prices are only going to increase in the future. I'm not sure what the fuel prices are where you're at, but I doubt this will be economical for you now, and especially in the future.

I hope this helps you out.

Features & Specifications

Holmes Water-filled Whole Room Radiator #HWH2605-UM:
Silently circulates warm air evenly through room
Cycles through wattages to use less energy
Nonpolluting, noncombustible, anticorrosive
Ideal for extended use in family rooms, large bedrooms and 3-season porches
360-degree tip-over switch and auto safety shutoff
Large handle and easy-roll casters for portablilty

The one from Wal Mart I posted is one of the 'green' ones that uses less energy. You can always go to the store and look on the box. They generally tell you how much electricity they use, you can then use that to estamate your bill. I have a natural gas heater in the hall way and 2 electric space heaters one in the living room and one in the back bedroom. My Electric bill actually goes down in the winter time because I'm not running the A/C, but the gas goes up just a bit, it all balances out the same at my house.

I bought two oil filled electric heaters that are 110 current and they only cost me thirty dollars each and I've used them going on three winters this year. They save me about one hundred and thirty eight dollars a month on my gas bill and I've yet to have them on the highest settings and I live in New York, so that's a miracle within itself considering how cold our winters get. Actually, I've found these heaters work great around my snakes and they've never had any health related issues as a result of using them. Mine came from Walmart.

Kewl :o)
I'm between Utica and Syracuse. My electric bill only went up forty three dollars average a month when I started running my oil filled heaters.. I do also keep a humidifier going in the cage room and an added asset of two small waterfalls (electric) at each end of the Argentines cages that runs 24/7. I also mist them everyday at least once a day if not more to insure they have plenty of moisture.
The waterfalls and humidifier run all year long so during the winter has no effect on my utility bill other than it does any other part of the year.

well i'll bet that you know where rome is? i went to school for the deaf there. i am shooting for other heater rather than the first one i wanted. i worry too much when it come to my burms because they are prone to RI. but the rest of my snakes i don't worry because they need to be cooled somewhere for breeding anyway:D

I live in Rome and I actually taught art at the Rome Deaf School for two years back in the early 80's. It's a gorgeous school and they sure have an awesome track for running right out front of the school. Real nice place and wonderful staff. :o)

I use to use the oil filled heaters that Chuck posted and they work great. My bill didn't go up much with them unlike the coil heaters they can make your bill go up. and with the oil filled heaters you can use an empty metal coffee can filled with water set right ontop of it so you don't have to spend the money on a humidifier or the electicity to run it. This is just my opinion.

Oh I forgot that last year we used the one that you posted in our body shop to keep the paint booth warm and we spent more money on the karosene than we did on our electric bill for the 4000 sq ft shop. And when the winter here was over the whole top of our heaters had turned black from all the fumes that were coming off of them. If it were me I would go with one of the oil filled ones like what Chuck posted, esp if it was to keep my snakes warm. But I live in Texas and we are still wearing shorts here. so I know it is way more colder in New York than here.

Everybody gave some good feedback/suggestions..... I'll agree with many of the posters: electric is safer....just do your homework and check the wattage on the side of the box of the heater so that you don't have to take out a loan to pay your bill (I can speak from experience on that one )

i use electric as well..luckily i live in florida so once you set them to a thermostat they only run for a little while at a time..maybe an increase of $50 month on coldest months..but i also use underbelly heat so i basically use the space heater to keep the cold air from setting in
