So I used the search function for the forums but it couldn't find anything, so sorry if this has already been discussed.

But like the title says, after my burm is done shedding I plan to feed him. What are the best ways to kill the rat/mouse? They were feeding him live prey at the store where I got him from but I would like to transfer him over to fresh killed to prevent injury.

I have read somewhere on here, couldnt find the post, about using CO2 to kill the mouse, but I don't have that option as of right now, so any other ways would be acceptable. :)

Grap the tail, swing it in a circle whacking the head on a blunt hard object.....edge of a counter top works pretty well.

Only problem is, if you don't get it on the first shot, you are usually faced with a less than happy rat......so make it count! LOL

the other problem with that method is the if you catch the rat just right you spatter the wall and counter with blood i believe fred has a diagram somewhere or pictures of a cheap and easy co2 death machine i will see if i can find it

One easy to build gas chamber. Drill hole in steralite box, silicone in paintball remote, hook up tank, kill rats and rabbits and mice and anything small enough to fit in the box.
Slowly let the gas into the box until the rats pass out and then turn it off. At that point there should be enough gas in the box to do the job.

If you cant find the gas, just buy dry ice and crush it,put it into a bottle and add warm water. This should create the same gas.See ive never done it before, lol but i just thought of that.A good way of doing this is just simply placing the rodent into a pillow case or bag and hitting it onto the wall. Then open it and make sure its dead.

yeah the dry ice method works, ive done it before. Just put dry ice in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket or anything with a lid, put a piece of cardboard or something over it and set the rat on it, pour in water and then loosely cover the bucket. Works good, have done it before to freeze my own rats before.

Rats are a bit tricky because they are bigger, but for mice you can also pin them down on the counter right behind the skull with a ruler, screw driver, or similar device, and then yank very hard and quick upward on the tail. This will separate the vertebral column.

At the black-footed ferret center where I volunteer, they kill scores of hamsters by holding them around the neck with bbq tongs and whacking them on counters.

Isn't this a fun thread :-) I guess no one really enjoys killing fuzzy animals, but a snake's gotta eat, right?

I just had this vision of Sam with a rabbit hung from a tree using it as a pinata.

Umm, eew? I don't think candy would come out...

Anyway, I p/k mine with CO2, or buy frozen (except for a very few that only take live as yet), but what I did before I had CO2 set up was grab the rat by the tail, swing it in a circle for a few seconds, then hit it on or right behind the head with a wooden ruler, or the hard part of a paintbrush (right below the bristles). That usually knocked them out or killed them with one whack, and the only blood was a rare nosebleed.

Hey Guru,
can you make my rat wacker with a stun gun too.

Sky's the limit! Probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch to disassemble a stungun and incorporate it into one...LOL

killing sticks are cool till you whack your knuckle with one of em trying to get a rabbit. Makes it even cooler when you can't use your finger for a few weeks.

Just a thought, but why not let the snake kill it? All of my snakes minus my 3 hoggies all eat live. Nothing better then hearing a 5 pound bunny squeel for its life.

My reason for not feeding live is simple. I don't want my snakes injured or hurt in any way.

I usually grab the rat's by the tale and crack their heads against the counter. I've killed g-pigs with a custom made killing stick. It was a 2x2 with a small groove cut in it. Rabbit's I buy dead.

Best way I know of to kill rabbits is grab them by the ears with one hand and by the hind legs with the other, then give it a quick yank with both hands as if you are trying to rip it in half. That separates the cervical spine.

Who wants to risk an infection from a rabbit or rat bite? I know some people feed live with no problem but why take the risk if you don't have to?
