Sam has heard this story already but I figured it was worth sharing with the rest of the group. It is funny as hell now that it is over with but it sucked the night it happened.
Anyone who deals with rodent pro knows that they can be out of rats a lot. Lori and I decided to get some Guinea Pigs this time around since they were out of most of the rats we needed. It is not something we recommend feeding all the time because they are high in fat. We figured a one month run 2-4 feeds per animal wouldn't be a bad thing. There were no smalls but with the range of size on their mediums we figured we could sort through them and repack the sizes we needed. So we put in for our monthly order, which showed up on Thursday.
After sitting on the floor of the snake room checking in the order, pulling a feed, and sorting through 100 medium pigs, I learned the hard way I am VERY allergic to guinea pigs. I broke out into hives and started sneezing like mad. With my normal pine and timothy hay allergies Lori immediately got on the phone with Rodent Pro to find out if either of those were used by them. After not getting anyplace with them she got mad and hung up. While this was going on I took a double dose of allergy pills and continued with setting for that nights feed, figuring it was nothing to worry about. While defrosting I took a face full of steam straight from the tub we defrost in. Which is when things got really bad.
I ended up spending the next couple hours on the couch unable to breathe other then short very shallow breaths. Lori got back on the phone with Rodent Pro and told them I was probably going to end up in the hospital, which as bad as I was we should have probably made that trip, thats when she found out that they use aspen and no hay. It has been a few days since the incident but my chest muscles are still sore from coughing.
So in the end I have dealt with venomous reptiles in the field, handle our burms no problem, but in the end was almost taken out by 100 frozen medium guinea pigs. That would have sucked.
