i just saw an local craiglist ad of free 40 african soft fur rats! but since they are not a reg rats i am worried if my snakes may be hooked on these? should be great for my picky eater (grantie burm) that only ate once for me. but i also have pines and bulls to feed it to.

yeah great deal. but i am not going to breed them, if i do take them i am going to freeze them. but my question is would it be okay to feed them to my snakes? i ask because i have read that asf rats are great for picky eater snakes. i am afraid that my snakes might get hooked on these rats and won't go back to every day feeder rats that we feed to snakes.

There is a rodent breeder in south Florida that is selling them as feeders.

Pretty sure they are just a designer rat.....probably still taste the same to a snake! LOL
I wouldn't worry about that one personally (Them getting hooked on them).

I think they are just a little smaller than normal rats. A large from south florida rodents is only 30+ grams while smalls are 15-25 grams

up till a year or two they were quite pricy and were used for picky ball pythons i believe they were a little over $30.00 a piece we new ball python breeders who would leave them with the normal rodents senting them all then i guess someone over here got them to breed and bingobango the price turned into just a little more than a normal rat...

well i am going to pick them up tomarrow hehe....she emailed me and we email back and forth then she asked are you using them as feeders? i said no they're for my wife and my wife always wanted some of these. gosh i am guilty for lying but hey it's free and i get about 40 of them that can last in a freezer for about 3 or 4 months. i've got 3 snakes who can take those pnes and a bull. but if those rats are smaller than i think then my other snakes can take those.

lol...yeah i always keep a look out but never got lucky until today. because they ask for a fee to be sure they are not feeders. like $5 or $10 just for two rats or mice and that is alot just for feeders lol. i'll get back to you guys tmw to let ya know how many rats i got.
Man I heard these things are great! I'd set up a small breeding colony if I were you. I don't think they are very cheap either.

well i came home with about little over 10 of them and now i don't even know what to do with them lmao! i am not going to use them as feeders because i don't want any of my snakes to get hooked on these and not go back to your every day mice/rats. so i gotta find some home for them. they are for ball pythons anyway.

from what i read, seems to me that those rats are commonly used with ball python when they come in imports in the pet trades and those rats are like candy to balls and help to get them started. that's one of the other thing that balls eat in the wild too.
basically since there is feeder rats out there to feed the snakes with and i should just stick with it. if my snakes have a taste for a new soft fur rats they might want to stick with them and if they do it not cheap and not easy to get those kind of rats.
