View Full Version : Blue Eyes Question

I got a question today on my myspace from another ball python keeper that really baffled me. The girl said that her snake still has blue eyes even after it just shed one week ago. The only things I could think of was that perhaps it had gotten a sore somewhere and it was throwing the snake into more frquent sheds to heal the skin or that the snake didn't get the eyecaps off during its last shed.
Anyone else have any other ideas as to what this could be? I have never heard of a snake's eyes remaining blue after a shed. Any advice I can pass on to this girl I would really appreciate, and I'm sure she would too! Thanks in advance.

I have no ideas other than what you said.

Hard to say without pictures, but if it's shed and eyes are still milky.....probably blind for whatever reason.....just a guess though, like I said it's hard to determine without a picture or at least seeing the snake.

Thanks Brad. I will pass the info along and see if she can get a pic to me to post. Or, I'll see if I can just get her to join this site! ;)

Thanks for the feedback. I received another message from her. She said that the snake seems to be able to detect movement quite well, but IMO I believe that is due mostly to the fact that ball pythons "see" more with their heat pits than their eyes. I invited her to join the forum, but she didn't say either way on whether or not she planned to join. Guess we'll just all be kept in suspense! ;)

That was kinda along the same lines i was thinking. Jakes little blind rescue that is blind has blue eyes, well what is left of the eyes is blue.

Well, it appears that most people are in agreement; the snake is probably blind. Does anyone have any info I can pass on to her as to the health of a blind ball python? Does it affect their feeding, health, etc. in any way? I personally have never dealt with this, and I have no idea what to tell her. But I really do want this snake to have the best possible care. My gut instinct tells me this girl takes good care of her snake. I do not know her at all personally, but her messages tell me she is intelligent and very worried about the health of her snake. Thanks in advance guys!

Like you said pythons do most of thier seeing by the heat signature.....it's still possible for a blind snake to live a long healthy life in captivity.
