I just had this forwarded to me. I thought I'd share...

I had read a little bit about this case on
kingsnake, but was just shown a link to this blog on
it by somone on the azherps website. The blog goes
into quite a bit of detail about the events, but
essentially after this woman from wiscosin received a
ball python from a breeder in TX her collection began
to become ill and eventually die off from an unknown
(to her vet) RI that didn't respond to antibiotics.

Just the thought of losing an entire collection so
quickly is scary enough, but the comments later on in
the updates are what really worry me. The herp
virology expert, who was contacted when the local vet
couldn't ID the disease, mentioned that Rhabdovirus is
known from a number of collections in Texas (without
the origin of the original infected snake being
known). Beyond that they apparently would not release
the name of whose collections were known to have the
virus. With the NARBC show coming up it, this should
serve as a good reminder to quarantine any new
purchases from the show.

There is an extensive account on Fauna too & this virus(? so far they believe it is) appears to be airbourne IMHO quarantine should be defined.

Too many folks see putting a snake in a separate enclosure/rack in the same room as sufficient... it is not.

A separate room or building should be used in order to protect your collections. Be careful & play it safe for your herps. The new "bug" is a biggie.

Yeah, it's heartbreaking... I know how much each one of those snakes meant to her, we used to chat about "our babies". Jen's sharing all the details that she can so others don't have to go through this. The cost of finding out more is not inexpensive either; if anyone would like to help out, it will help fund the tests that will benefit the BP community.

Here's the info:
