I have a question for anyone knowledgeable on these guys. I have a friend who I have been trying to get into snakes for years now and she finally said she'd get one, but only one of these. I will be the one keeping it and taking care of it, but am not a huge fan of these to be truthful. They make me nervous. I would rather have to catch wild adult rocks then mess with these, but if its what she wants I'll have to put up with it and learn to like it. Anyways I am wondering how to go about selecting a baby(where to buy from, what to look for ect ect) and also what works best to make or keep them tame. Obliviously having owned numerous species of python I know nothing is guaranteed, but just looking for some advice. Thanks, Dan M.

LOL, that's rather amusing.....about the Rock and GTP....LOL But at anyrate.
There's quite a few people on here who have kept them more than I have, but in all honesty setup correctly they aren't all that difficult to care for. Biggest thing with them is the higher humidity and keeping proper airflow. I kept mine around 78-88 degrees temperature gradiant, you really don't want to much higher than that for heat, this is one species where heat panels work fantastically. HUmidity should run from 65-80%.
As for handling, that can be luck of the draw with these especially, I've seen both realatively calm ones and green chainsaws...LOL about the best plan of attack would be to buy a CB youngster from a reputable breeder, definitely makes all the difference in GTPs, calm consistant handling is about the only way to get them tamed down and keep them tamed down, I've heard stories where a once good natured GTP wasn't handled for awhile and it went back to being wild and nippy in no time flat. Kind of depends the snake though.
Ohhhh and for the breeder check out Signal Herp. http://www.signalherp.com/ guy is an arboreal master!

Definitely get CB....they are so easy if gotten from the right source. As Brad said, try Rico at Signal Herp. That's where I got mine and will get more in the future. Rico is super knowledgeable and a great guy. You will not be disappointed!

Thanks for the advice. When the time comes and I am ready to shell out a bunch of money just to shed some blood I know where to go. Thanks! Dan M.

Well a baby wont be a handleing snake. So dont buy a baby gtp if this is here first snake tell here to go and buy greg maxwells book the more complete chondro and read it once or twice. And then make her mind up on getting one. If she does end up wanting one tell here to get a yearling chondro!
yearlings usually arent as fragile, harder to take care of as hatchlings!
cageing is not hard at all just need to reasearch look on this website herpcages.com now humidity around 60-80% heating around 75-86 day , night temps around 68-75 and keeping the gtp tame is easy they are nocturnal soo you would want to play with them in the day when they are not so hungry lol . If you play with them at dusk around 8-10 they will bite you! because their in hunt mode. what alse hmmm i guess that it
buy the book, buy a good cage, buy a yearling you will have a good experience!
good luck!

You can say that again! Felicia (ATB) is most determined to stay on that hook. :D
But I'll love my GTP's. They're great. And all of mine are handlable, but I always use a hook to get them out and then transfer them to my hand.

hey if this friend of yours wants a tree Hugger (thats what i call em lol) she should get a carpet python they are nippy as babies but you don't have wait a while before you handle it like you would with a GT being that they are so fragile as babies. carpets are nice too look at and mine loves to hang on his tree branch. although i do like the GT i think they are beautiful but being that i like to handle my animals alot and i like getting babies it wouldn't do me any good to get one lol!
oh and as far as the nippy carpet they do clam down after a bit!:) but frist and formost make sure she does her resreach and here is another website with some good info too!
