View Full Version : Goldfish tank filter suggestions
I need to purchase one and need an idea of what to get for a 30 gallon hex tank filled with live plants and no undergravel filter. Anyone have any experience with fishes?

Personally in that type of situation I would be looking at one of the Penguin/Emperor systems....would give you 3 components of filtration, Mechanical, Chemical, and the Bio-Logical (though limited) with the bio-wheel.
Still a decent option for a system such as that.

Those are both great filters... marineland makes some great stuff.
I don't know how much space you hava available to hang a filter off of since it's a hex but I would suggest a Magnum. Marineland makes it and it's narrow, so it works great for hex tanks... and it's a canister so you can pretty much choose any type of filter medium to put in it. It's really strong, so it's great for dirty goldfish.

I'm with Loren on the canister filters...I find them to be much better filters. My favorites are the Rena Filstar XP filters. We use these at work in both the aquatics department and the herp department and they work fantastic. We run water falls in frog exhibits , use them on totally aquatic amphibians, and many of our fish have these. I swear by them. Here are a couple of links to reviews:

Keep in mind though these are not cheap. Good luck!!

Also a really nice filter if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks... but the extra money won't be wasted

Theres alot of filters you could try with in that situation however I would think about the long run of how many goldfish will be kept despite the fact they are cheap and when purchased small they dont stay small for long and comets will get to a size of about 12inch record being 18.7inch also goldfish eat plants and its fairly hard to keep them in planted tanks unless you have stuff that they cant eat in a hex tank I would reconsider your fish pick try some hatchet fish which will school on the top on the tank and maybe some cardinal or neon tetras or some rasboras those will stay in about the middle of the tank and dont forget some corys those neat little cats will stay on the bottum of your tank and help clean up and for help with algee pickup try some algee eatting shrimp or some otocinclus avoid angels in that setup as your tetras will be fish bait with them and you should have a awesome planted tank if you would like to discuss other fish that maybe compatible in your tank feel free to drop me a pm thanks
