what heat source would you use for a wooden cage, on a budget, im trying to figure out what would work good for not too much money, i saw a post not too long ago that had heat pockets in racks under the cages, what if i were to incorporate something like that into my cage, would heat tape work through wood?

Cheapest and most effective system is the good ol' Incandescent fixture with an infrared bulb....gets your backround temp. and the hotspot all in one shot. coat you about $15.00 to install. $1.00 for the socket, $5 for a cord, $6.00 for a dimmer, and couple bucks for the wire to make a cage around it.

I agree with Brad 100%
It's super simple to do if you use the stuff Brad mentioned. All of it is available at Home Depot or Lowes. I used a dimmer that I found in the home lighting dept. that is for a stand up corner room lamp. It's really easy to splice into the extention cord, and if you can find it, I recommend the plastic coated wire for the light cage. There's less chance of sharp edges and less I've found it doesn't get as hot to the touch.
Here's a picture of one that I made. Good Luck!!!
