Ok, I need help. I have 4 five foot and under burms. All of my snakes have AP cages except my rainbows who are in tubs for now. Everything was arranged that way because I knew I was going to have to buy the burms larger cages later so the rainbow will move into the burms old cages when they get there big ones. The thing is this....... I have been tossing the difference between the 6 and 8 foot cages. I keep going back and forth on if a 6 foot is large enough. If I am right its 1 square foot per foot of snake. Meaning in time a 6 foot might not be large enough but a friend has 2 8 footers and they are HUGE!!!
SO what is your thoughts? 6 or 8?
I don't keep burms but I would think 8 would be best. I often think bigger is better (without going too overboard). I keep Argentine boas in 6 foot cages and I couldn't imagine a big burm in one. Just my opinion. We have a burm at work and all I think a 6 foot cage would be good for is a hidebox!!

IMO I think a 6ft cage is just fine. I would try to make it a 6x3or4x15or18. I personally think that is fine for what you want and need to properly keep and breed the animals that you want.

That's one way of putting it........ hehehehehe ;)
8'ers are great if you ahve the rom and/or a really big burm. 6'ers work great, and thats what I use and have used from the start. I wont knock anyone for using bigger cages its all our own likes/dislikes,etc. :)

if you have the room for the 8' cages I always think that the more room you can offer the better, but I don't think you're gonna have a problem with 6' cages.
Either way, I think you're gonna be ok

I can already picture it...
Brad builds a 12x12 plexi box in the center of the house..... For HIM to live in.
The snakes get the rest of the house for themselves.

Even a 20 foot Retic in my house would go in a 6x3
6 long by 3 deep is as big as I go.

I plan on building them 8 x 2 it depends on space and personal preference. I personally have more room for longer and narrower, than shorter and deeper. Size/Shape of room is what makes my decision.

when it comes to caring for pets we choose to seek out less is not more.
my burm is in a 8x3x2 cage at 9 feet, she has 24 sq feet to utilize.
when we get our own house i will build her a big display cage 12x6x6 or so.
why because i enjoy watching herself thermoregulate and be happy.
now some say ohhh they dont like to much space i say nay.
when she was in her old cage 6x2= 12 sqaure feet, she was between 7-8 feet.
she was unhappy, always trying to break out, nose rubbing ect.
now she had 4 extra square feet. so theoretically she should be happy.
but she wasnt.
so as brad says im a big fan of bigger is better.

6x3 is 18 square feet. to me that is cruel. thats less than humane standards.

Well... 6' is an ABSOLUTE minimum for the bigger guys.
I've always believed that you should always give as much space as you are able to.
For those of you who say "too much space" is a bad thing..... lock yourselves in a closet for a week and then re-think your theory.

I got to agree with you on that one. I used to have my big girl janie in a 6 footer and she hated it. She loves her new enclosure its 8'x4'x3' and she is between 10'-11'
