OK So I come home to find one of my tubs on my AP Rack broken. Come to find out the boy was playing with the rack and broke a corner of the tub, but taped it back together so no one would know and didn't tell anyone. Well I come home from my pre-deployment briefing tonight to find the corner of the tub that was taped back together pushed in the tub, and my hognose snake of 10 years missing. So we get busy looking and find him, put him in another tub and get to cleaning up the mess from looking for him. When we find my Jack Russell terrier walking into the kitchen. She has a nasty rash all over that she didn't have before the GF left the house for the briefing. So I got to looking at her and her lip is very swolen. The only thing I can come up with is she knocked the broken piece of the tub in and while she had her snout in the tub got bit on the lip.

So we know that hognoses are mildly venomous and me and Brad may feel a little diffrent of these 'hot colubrids', but here are some pics of my dog with theswollen lip and hives. The emergency vet clinic said there was nothing they could do, and they would be scared to give her anything over the counter for humans like benadryl because they didn't know how it would react to the mild venom from the snake. So all I can do at this point is watch her. She seems fine, tail wagging, running around trhe house with her chew toy. So for right now I will monitor her and take pics to keep a record of this for everyone.
Day of the bite:

And you can see on the part of her lip that is black (on the right side of the pic, which is her left side) where it is all swollen.

All I can say for this is "wow" I will keep this all updated and track the swelling and hives to see where they go and how she reacts to this.

Uhhhh huh.....seeee what have I been say'n!

Pain in the butt for the dog, but she'll pull through. If it were a worse case her larynx would've swollen shut and she would've asphixiated by now.

Poor girl....Looks it's pretty itchy.

Hope you find your Hog.

Already found the hognose, and yea she is pretty itchy, doing a lot of scratching. I'm just glad she didn't kill the snake. I know how she loves to hunt and kill little animals like field rats and ground squirls. But it will be intresting to see how she does over the next week and document the effects of the venom on her.

Well good deal on finding the snake!

Should be about proof positive right there, that they produce and can use a certain amount of toxin.

Thats pretty crazy, doesn't look very comfortable.

If she is anything like my jack russell you're damn lucky she didn't get a hold of the snake. My boy thinks he needs to kill every other animal in the house, including my late 135 lb sheep dog. I have to keep him locked away from all the furrys and snakes when they come out!

OK well she is doing a lot better today. The welts/hives on her belly are gone. She still has a few on her ribs, neck and of course her lip is still swollen. As for my opinion of hognose venom, I believe they are a mildly venomous colubrid yes, but I don't think their venom is medically significant to human life in toxicity. I treat my hognoses no diffrent then my gopher snakes or my milk snakes. Growing up with them wild around here they were just another snake and nothing to get your panties in a wad about. But that is just one mans opinion, I could be wrong. LOL.

Was the same way for me growing up ... but it is interesting to see what your dog went through, glad the snake is ok & that the pup is doing better.

Not all Chuck, I free handle my Hognoses all the time LOL. The only thing I would point out though, is that as with any toxin, there also exists the possibility of an allergic reaction, so if you are one of those people who are really allergic to bee stings ect. it would be wise to use a bit more caution with snakes such as this. Otherwise I would agree hognose snakes wouldn't normally pose a threat to humans at all. But in the strictness sense of the word....are venomous...even if it isn't life threatening.
