View Full Version : Jesus the Mexican Hognose died
Yes and I am so sad. He never made the switch to rodents and gave up taking food completely. I could never get him to eat a thing and he died today. The other one, a female, eats only sporatically and I expect her to follow with the same fate. The lesson to be learned here is: do not always believe that snakes are indeed eating when you buy them. I will never again buy young snakes as I did this time. I will buy older hatchlings. I am so desvasted as these are the first snakes I ever had die on me.
I am just not having a good snake year!

I'm sorry Meli, these things do happen....Hognoses can be some real pain in the butts...I've had more than my fair share of run-ins with these guys. Hatchlings especially can be hard to get going especially if they are not eating like whoever said they were.
Bum deal girl, if you don't mind me asking what have you tried for feeding? Perhaps I give you some tips so we can try to get the female going.

pinkies scented with toads, tuna juice, anoles and plain washed pinkies. I have tried frogs, toads and anoles. They have taken and refused all of the above at one time or another. Now they have steadily refused everything. I just really think its over. I have had a person who breeds hognoses tell me to give up on them last fall but I wouldn't listen. He told me they would eventually die out and it's looking like he was right. He said out of clutches there are those that just end up this way no matter what you do and that is just nature. It just sucks no matter how you size it up.
I never saw snakes refuse live food until these guys came around. They will refuse any live food no matter what it is if they don't want to eat. They can be a nervous person's nightmare.

Wow, unfortunately I'd say your friend was probably right, if they are refusing even live straight up toads....it just wasn't meant to be, toads for hognoses are like chickens to other snakes it's usually never refused. Sounds to me like whoever sold them to you took ya for a ride.
That's really a sucky deal, sorry to hear.
I could say you could start force-feeding her, but I'm not sure how much it would with this species...in my experience with hognoses once you quit force-feeding she would eventually peater out and die anyway.

Really sorry to hear that. It seams harder when you are struggling to keep them alive. Best of luck with the female.
