Im thinking about it. If I start having trouble with him feeding I might release him because I dont want the guy starving himself because he is stressed. Im am shocked how relaxed he is when being held. I will keep ya posted

Nice snake!

No offense though; but you might want to release him. I won't "run and tell", but the DNR and USFW do frequent reptile boards. It is illegal for anyone over the age of 18 to keep any native species of reptile or amphibian in the state of Ohio, without a permit. Its about impossible to acquire the permit, and at that; after the animal hits 18" or so, they have to be PIT tagged too :(

(3) Only an Ohio resident may possess four total individuals of each native reptile or amphibian listed in paragraphs (C)(3)(a) and (C)(3)(b) of this rule taken from the wild.

(a) The following reptiles may be taken from the wild:

Common Musk Turtle (Sternotherus odoratus), Common Map Turtle (Graptemys geographica), Midland Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta marginata), Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), Northern Fence Lizard (Sceloporus undulatus hyacinthinus), Ground Skink (Scincella lateralis), Five-Lined Skink (Eumeces fasciatus), Broadhead Skink (Eumeces laticeps), European Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis), Queen Snake (Regina septemvittata), Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon), Northern Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi dekayi), Midland Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi wrightorum), Northern Redbelly Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata), Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis), Butler’s Garter Snake (Thamnophis butleri), Eastern Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis sauritus sauritus), Northern Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis sauritus septentrionalis), Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon platirhinos), Eastern Smooth Earth Snake (Virginia valeriae valeriae), Northern Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsii), Midwest Worm Snake (Carphophis amoenus helenae), Eastern Worm Snake (Carphophis amoenus amoenus), Black Racer (Coluber constrictor constrictor), Blue Racer (Coluber constrictor foxii), Smooth Green Snake (Opheodrys vernalis vernalis), Black Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta), Eastern Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum), and Northern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen).

Actually he should be good....legal jargon can be very tricky if you don't watch it...LOL

There is a sub-clause which does indeed pertain to people 17 years or younger, but right below it is another sub-clause stating an "Ohio Resident" may keep..blah, blah, blah... the only ones you have to worry about are the "endangered" species which are the ones that will require permits and the PIT tags...which are also in relation to breeding, ect.

From what I can find as long as Troy stays within 4 native reptiles of each defined by this list...and does not breed or sell them he should be in the green. This is actually a fairly common law in a lot of states.

Legal jargon....ain't it grand? LOL They write it in such a way that perspective and interpretation can be slightly skewed depending on your vantage point. Biggest thing to remember is while it seems to run all together the actual sub-clauses are a separate entity....most times what happens is people jump back and fourth too much when reading it.

Actually, I had a little dealing with this when I turned 18. If they are native, you do need a permit. The permit is difficult to acquire if you read more into it and contact the DNR, but it isn't that pricey. They come in and ask for data on the background of the animal. They weigh and measure it, and decide if it needs PIT tagged. Endangered, or threatened animals are not allowed to be owned by any resident...just institutions and zoological gardens/facilities. I about landed myself in jail at 18 for owning a Fox snake I had since I was 16, just because they were recently listed as threatened species....

Just be careful with it man. You'll get different stories from different officers when dealing with the DNR. Good luck with the snake.
