well this morning we woke up to a very nasty mess in our ball python, Syaninde, tank. now this is the ball that wasn't eating for us and then we gave him 2 chicks and he woofed those down no problem. now, only a few days after, he had diarraeh. yesterday we cleaned the whole snake room and while we did that all the snakes got to sit in some warm water for about 2 hrs, to get rid of some mites we are still fighting with.

could his diareah be from being in the water for so long, or from the new diet (chicks), or could it be something more serious like parasites or worms. he seems to be acting the same other than refusing mice. he is still very active.

any words of advice are greatly appreciated. thanks.

I have experienced the same symptoms in my Bull Snake. He first began refusing food, than about 2 months later the loose stool began. It turned out to be a parasite problem that was easily fixed with antibiotics.

I have heard poultry can cause loose stool as well but have no personal experience with it. Hopefully someone else has a bit more insight on this.

Good luck!

I would do a round of panacur just to be sure - but most likely it is the chicken - chicken comes out super nasty!

Yeah chicks tend to get the bowels going for sure, lol. Kinda like a person eating alot of fiber, lmao. Sort of,haha. Was it a live or f/t? Sometimes the f/t can cause loose stool as well.

thanks guys..
i had a feeling it was the chicken, BUT my female ball is eating a chick once a month, just for the fat and protein to bulk her up and she has never had a problem w/ chicks. also our burms and boas get chicks every now and again, again for protein, and never any problem.

and excuse my ignorance on this one but what is panacur?? i know its a medicine.

we gave syaninde the chick to see if he would eat it because he was refusing everything else, rats, mice, live, f/t, didnt matter.

we'll just have to keep an eye on him.

You notice it as much with feeding differnt food items, just if you feed exclusively chicken/fowel.

It's a broad spectrum internal parasite medication, most offen used with dogs, cats, horses....but the can work equally well in reptiles in the right dosage.

Yup that would be easiest.

Though if if you still have problems locating it that way...I've seen it for sale on Kingsnake.com from various dealers as well.

ok... I'll beat the dead horse....

My guess is it's the chickens. I had an anaconda that wouldn't eat anything but chicks for it's 1st year and never had a "normally" solid crap. Once I finally got it on rats it was a different story completely... back to normal.

But I would also take Lori's advice about dosing the snake with some panacur just to be safe... it can't hurt.

Good luck!!!

thanks everyone.

when we find this medicine, i will be sure to give it to him.

anyways, this morning we rubbed a chicken on a rat, actually let them thaw out ontop of each other, and he still refused the rat, but was excited to eat the chick. baffeling.
