Ok so I call up my local herp vet to look into getting some meds for the snakes. I understand that they are not going to give me anything narcotic and thats ok. I try to get some pancure or aany general dewormer to treat anything that might come up. She tells me she cant because I dont know what I am doing and might kill a snake. This coming from the same vet who killed one of my boas. We only have 1 exotic vet that deals with reptiles in my area. I took a burm and a boa in the last time because they burm needed surgery and the boa needed meds. The vet told us when we got there that we didnt need to bring the burm because she didnt need to look at her before the surgery date however charge me $70.00 just to walk in the door with her. So $70.00 for each snake is $140.00 JUST TO WALK IN THE DOOR!! This doent include the cost of xrays, exams, and meds. I hate to think the vet is all about the mighty dollar but I am starting to think so. I told her I had 13 snakes and thought it would be kinda costly to bring them all in. $910.00 just to walk in. She smiled and said "its the only way to get it done" After the death of the other boa I tried to get a deal when I brought the new boa in the get check out and was told they could do nothing for me. :puke: Damn vet.

Yeah i've gotten that line of bullcrap too....it's all about the money especially when you are dealing with small animal vets....what you need to do is track down someone who deals with the larger stuff like horses ect. Hell even our local feed store carries pancur and it's in larger quanity bottles for half the price the small time vets charge you. Pancur is Pancur no matter what bottle you get it in! LOL
Anyway give it a shot man....little digging you just may find what you are looking for.

Guess that is my only option. Its a shame people are all about the money. I understand they need to make money but there is no reason to drag us across the coals. Mabey I will have some luck at the show this month.

Go to the Bean farm. I think its like beanfarm.com or something like that. I always got all of my panacur and flagyl from them, and its cheap and they ship it right out to you. I used them a couple times and was very happy. Good luck!!! Dan M.

My vet is good & she keeps snakes. My first year breeding I brought all 13 of the hatchlings in to have her help me sex them- $45 for the office visit, that's it & she showed me how to do the probe on the little ones, how to select the correct size...
There are good folks out there, I hope you find a better vet.

I wish I could find another vet. The only problem is there arent any!! I only wish I could find a good vet that was doing for the love of it and not the love of money. I hate to say that about a vet because I would like to think that someone would go into the veteranarian feild because of the love of the animal. As I stated before, I understand they need to make money but sometimes it gets a litle out of control. I could only imagine the bill if I took a clutch of babies in the have them sexed or anything. LOL It would cost me over a grand just to walk in the door. There is however hope at the end of the road. We are getting married in September and moving back to NC shortly after that. We will be 45 minutes from the largest facilities for reptile life in the world. http://www.alligatoradventure.com/ I bet they know a vet or six. I plan on becoming good friends with alligator adventures if they like it or not. LOL

wow that is a crappy story. its sad that there are few reptile vets out there that actually do it for the love of the animals. i thank god that we have one fairly close to us (if an hour and twenty minutes is close) and its only 45 for the visit and he gives us everything we need and i can call him anytime w/ questions. and i think we are his only snake patiences cuz he knows all our snakes by name. lol.

The clinic we use has a great doctor we trust with our dog (saved him with a long heartworm program when Balto came up with Stage 2 Heartworms). He was great. He also insisted that we pay in sections based on the treatments (it took at least 4 months to get him cured) instead of all at once which some doctors will do. He was honest with us. He said that sometimes the treatment itself can kill the animals and no one should pay for anything past that point if it happens. Sounded harsh but I like the honesty.
But the cat doctor I'd just as well not see again. You remember I put that long ranting post in the Furry thread about my cat. She's still around but will never get well. She has to eat a High protein special RX renal cat food for the rest of her life or her kidneys will shutdown. Her arthitis is so bad she limps everywhere (though god knows how she jumped on the counter last night!) but they can't give her anything for the arthritis because the medication would kill her. She went test crazy and even did the wrong test and made us come back. Then once they gave us the wrong results from her file. It was so messed up we were about to schedule to have Sybil put down, thinking there was nothing we could do. Luckily a friend of our works there and got it all straightened out and that's how we found out the truth.
Luckily we haven't had to see any reptile doctors yet. But if we do we are going to Houston's best reptile vet. They won't just be going to the clinic and seeing a doctor who "remembers studying reptiles in vet school". We'll stick with the real guy and hope he's not just into the money as well.
People say they want to become doctors and dentists for the money but I think being a vet is really where the money is at. All of our money!
Okay, my rant is over.
